Foundations of Islamic Education in Saudi Arabia and Their Relevance to the Education System

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the foundations of Islamic education in Saudi Arabia and examine their relevance to the Indonesian education system. The research employs a qualitative comparative approach using document analysis. Data were collected from official education policies, curriculum frameworks, and academic literature related to Islamic education reforms in Saudi Arabia, particularly within the framework of Saudi Vision 2030, as well as Indonesia’s national education policies based on Pancasila. Data analysis was conducted through comparative content analysis by identifying key themes such as educational foundations, curriculum orientation, integration of Islamic values, and sociopolitical context. The findings reveal that Islamic education in Saudi Arabia is strongly grounded in the Qur’an and Sunnah, emphasizing tawhid, moral discipline, and the comprehensive integration of religious values across educational practices. These principles demonstrate normative relevance to Indonesia, particularly in strengthening character and moral education. However, differences in social plurality, state ideology, and decentralized educational governance limit the direct adoption of the Saudi educational model. This study highlights the necessity of a contextual and adaptive approach in selectively integrating universal Islamic educational values within Indonesia’s pluralistic and democratic educational framework
